The first MBA studies in Poland with three specialisations, including sports and healthcare administration, have now begun at Gdansk University of Technology. A group of twenty-one scholars with an average professional experience of 11 years is the first to be initiated in the most sought-after secrets of business know-how. Eighty percent of the lessons will be conducted in English.

The official inauguration was held on Friday 24th October 2008 at the GUT Faculty of Management and Economics. The MBA students include six directors and two chairpersons, but mostly experienced project managers. Approximately 25 percent of the participants are women.
The studies are to last two years, that is four semesters, and meetings are to be held once a month – 550 hours in total. Eighty percent of the lessons will be conducted in English as the teaching staff are from various countries. The first year comprises a joint studies programme: Business Fundamentals, which is to provide students with greater in-depth knowledge of the most essential aspects of general business and management practice. In the second year participants will be able to choose one of three specialisations: Strategic, Programme and Project Management; Sports Management or Healthcare Management. These specialisation programmes have been prepared in collaboration with leading academic centres in countries such as Great Britain and Germany, and the support of international business organisations.
'I work for multinational company producing electronic maritime maps where having an MBA is very well seen,' explains Monika Strzelecka, a management and marketing graduate from a private university. 'I initially wanted to study in Warsaw. However, when enrolment began here, in Gdansk, and I looked at the studies programme, I found it so interesting that I decided there was no reason to leave. The fact that the studies will be conducted in English is a definite advantage. Speaking or reading in English is one thing, but acquiring new knowledge in that language is something much more.'
No one needs to be convinced of the recognition MBA degrees have in the world. The first MBA courses were started in the USA. After World War II, they appeared in Europe, and in Poland in the 1990s. Though not quite doctorate studies, they are something much more than ordinary postgraduate studies. The MBA is the highest academic degree in the field of business studies. Managers with MBA degrees can count on key positions in business. MBA studies are an expensive investment, but, as practice shows, one which generally produces a quick return.
One of the guests at the inauguration was John Raine from the University of Birmingham, who as a member of the British MBA Accreditation Commission had nothing but praise for the enthusiasm of the new MBA course organisers.
'We want to obtain accreditation from the Association of MBAs because no other Polish programme has got it,' admits Prof. Piotr Dominiak, the Dean of the GUT Faculty of Management and Economics. 'Already at the planning stage we decided that the studies would have an international character, where the students are taught by experts from various foreign universities.'
The Gdansk University of Technology MBA studies organiser is the Faculty of Management and Economics. Enrolment takes place once a year. The cost for the two–year course is 30,000 PLN.
